Pass
is all you will ever need to Pass your police Sergeants
exam and/or police Inspectors exam!
The
Early Years: 1998 - 2000
DETAIL
(Distance Enhanced Training And Interactive Learning)
Technologies Ltd. was started by serving Police Officers,
including Ian Johnson who is now the Managing Director.
The founders identified a fundamental deficiency in
how distance learning was being delivered via software
applications. Prior to the development of their innovative
software, PASS (Professional Advancement System Software)
computers were being used as simply no more than a
presentation platform for Multiple Choice Question
& Answers. For example: if the answer to say Question
No. 1 was 'A' one day, the next time you were presented
with Question No. 1 the answer would still be 'A'
(a STATIC QUESTION); thus you learn Questions for
their associative Answers, not the reasons WHY the
answer was 'A'. Having identified this flaw Ian developed
PASS to be able to self generate DYNAMIC QUESTIONS.
The really clever bit (which allowed them to PATENT
PASS) is it's ability to calculate all the possible
permutations that an exam writer can ask an exam question
on. In addition the artificial intelligence routines
within PASS are able to construct Questions individually,
testing your weakest areas. Thus it is able to determine
when you have mastered a particular subject area,
moving you on. At the same time it is able to recognise
subject areas you are having problems understanding,
breaking down complex areas into self contained simple
principles, which when mastered are combined back
together again, forming the complex Question. Another
critical component is PASS's analysis capabilities
- everything you do within PASS is recorded, giving
analysis capabilities, not just to the individual
but to an Organisation as well.
Having started research and development in 1998 the
founders spent the next two years developing PASS.
PASS in itself was always going to be innovative,
but they had to do more to get the concept of virtual
teaching across to students. But, how were they to
present this concept of virtual teaching ? [which
PASS was doing in the background] ? - Well they developed
their own 'live' virtual teacher - 'Sarge'. 'Sarge'
is a three-dimensional character who talks (via live
speech), listens and reacts to everything the user
does - guiding them, giving feedback much like a human
teacher would in their study session during their
use of PASS.
The
founders needed to identify a target market to which
they could initially apply the PASS technology. What
better way than to apply it to a market they understood
implicitly - their own - UK Police Forces. Thus the
founders approached South Wales Police (their employers),
and negotiated a business interest to allow them to
develop DETAIL TECHNOLOGIES LTD and it's flagship
product, PASS.
As
part of ALL police officers national training and
promotion they have to sit Multiple Choice Examination
papers for promotion and training. These exams are
founded on four Police Manuals which were published
by Blackstone Press Ltd., on behalf of National Police
Training. These books are annually updated and printed
in August. The manuals were launched in 1998, having
been written by Superintendent Fraser Sampson who
at the time was the officer in charge of the Examinations
Unit at National Police Training, Harrowgate.
*The
police exam questions contained within both Pass and
Pass Online are fully in line with the Centrex Ospre®
syllabus and the current Blackstones Manuals. They
can be used for any of the police Ospre® Pt 1
exams and also the National Investigators Exam.*
